"
EVENING  PASTURE" by Matt Gray

RESIDENT ARTIST,  MATT GRAY

Born 1961 on the Eastern shore of Mobile Bay in the sleepy south Alabama town of Daphne , I learned to walk and sail at about the same time.  My family moved to Gatlinburg , Tennessee in 1966 where my father, international artist Jim Gray, opened his first fine art gallery.  Even though dad had been an artist since before I was born, this little gallery in Gatlinburg was my first real exposure to the world of art.  My parents always had art supplies for us kids to “play” with.  It was never pushed on us, but whenever we were “caught” drawing, painting, or sculpting, we were encouraged and taught.  I never had any formal training as a sculptor or painter, although I spent countless hours sitting near dad, watching over his shoulder and asking questions about the beauty that he created every day of my life.  As a young man I gravitated toward sculpture and woodcarving to sooth my creative itch, but I guess the business side of art gathered most of my time.  I owned my first gallery at age 21 and now sit in my fifth gallery that is located in Nashville Indiana .  For many years I was surrounded with the art of others and the undeniable itch to create art finally won me over again in late 2005.  Now I feel I'm driven.  As I paint each new piece, I feel that I have come home.  I wish I had started seriously painting years ago.  The paintings seem to be spilling out from years of storing images in my head that “sure would make a great painting”.  I told someone the other day that “I took to long getting started and I have so far to go on this artistic journey,…but I sure am having fun getting there!”

The Iris Garden Gallery is located in Nashville, Indiana in the heart of the beautiful hills of Brown County.  It is owned and operated by resident artist Matt Gray and his wife Amy.

"We have over 75 wonderful artist that we show in our gallery and proudly are able to call them all our friends."  Amy says, "Every time Matt wants to go 'exploring' for new subject matter for his paintings, we always keep our eyes open for great new artists for the gallery."   Matt adds, "I think the litmus test as to whether a new artist comes into the gallery or not is simple.  We simply go after that which we would love to have in our own home."
